1. Roomful of Blues

Roomful of Blues, established in 1967 in Westerly, Rhode Island, stands as a pivotal force in the resurgence of blues and swing music. Their inception marks a cornerstone in the blues genre, influencing the swing revival movement and solidifying Rhode Island’s place on the musical map. Now in their sixth decade and led by guitarist Chris Vachon, the group released their 20th album, Steppin’ Out!, on Alligator Records in October 2025, with D.D. Bastos joining as their first female lead vocalist.
2. Throwing Muses

Throwing Muses emerged from Newport, Rhode Island, becoming a significant player in the alternative rock scene during the 1980s. Their innovative blend of post-punk and alternative sounds garnered critical acclaim and paved the way for similar artists in Rhode Island and beyond. Kristin Hersh, David Narcizo and Bernard Georges remain the core lineup, and the band released their album Moonlight Concessions in March 2025.
3. John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band
The Ocean State’s very own John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band cemented their place in Rhode Island’s rock history with their successful soundtrack for “Eddie and the Cruisers.” Their enduring popularity within the region echoes their impact and connection to the musical heritage of Rhode Island. The band ended a 37-year studio gap with Sound of Waves in April 2025; long-time saxophonist Michael “Tunes” Antunes died that August at 85, shortly after his final show with the group.
4. Velvet Crush
Formed in Providence, Velvet Crush is a power pop band whose influence is deeply etched in the indie music landscape. The Rhode Island natives made a significant impact with their melodic hooks, contributing to the broader indie rock movement. Core members Paul Chastain and Ric Menck have kept the project largely dormant since 2004’s Stereo Blues, with a brief New England reunion run in 2019.

The group has been on hiatus since 2021, following abuse allegations against frontman Alexis Marshall that he denied.
7. Sage Francis

Sage Francis, a rapper with deep roots in Providence, Rhode Island, has been a substantial figure in the hip hop community. He closed out his long-running Sick of… mixtape series with A Sick Twist Ending in January 2025 and continues to run his Strange Famous Records label.
