Wyclef Jean admits that he was in the middle of an affair with Lauryn Hill. While Jean did not admittedly say, “I broke up the Fugees,” he now admits that it was the relationship that tore them apart.
The Fugees were a hip-hop group that rose to fame in the mid-1990s. Composed of Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Pras Michel, the group achieved critical and commercial success with their second album, “The Score.” However, their time together was short-lived, and the group disbanded in 1997.
Affair with Lauryn Hill
Wyclef Jean has admitted that an affair with Lauryn Hill caused the Fugees to flame out. In his memoir, “Purpose,” Jean writes about a relationship with Hill that was so combustible that it’s no surprise it burnt down the house.
He describes the relationship as being like two outlaws in love, and the fights they had were so intense that they came close to getting arrested a few times in Europe.
Jean’s defense is that he was younger then, and Hill was irresistible. He felt he couldn’t help himself, and he is just being honest with his feelings. However, he won’t take responsibility for what happened to Hill in the aftermath.
Lauren Hill’s Reunion With The Fugees
Hill briefly reunited with the Fugees in 2004/05 and has made sporadic appearances since, but mostly she seems to have adopted the stance of a hostile recluse. Some fans have blamed Wyclef Jean for her erratic behavior, but he argues that she moved on from him to great success.
In conclusion, the breakup of the Fugees was due to an affair between Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill that added tension to an already volatile situation. Although The Fugees disbanded, their music continues to influence and impact the hip-hop and R&B genres.
